about small screens

The Site

Small Screens began as a resource to help screen writers navigate new media. I would give a lot of talks/professional advice in this area and figured it was probably more valuable for everyone in the long term if there was a place where this information was stored.

We’ll just call that the ‘nice’ version, shall we? Because it transpires that most people only professed to be interested in the biggest changes to hit their industry in its entire history. But hey, Noah only had to rescue two of each species, right?

Anyway, so version 2.0, or the ‘naughty’ version of Small Screens will contain
a) more swearing
b) things that interest me relating to screenwriting
c) things that interest me relating to media
d) things that interest me which are also unrelated to (b) or (c)

It is a home built principally of my interests and observations from working in, writing for and writing about emerging media.

There will be more comment on marketing and advertising. This is one of the biggest departures from your ‘classic’ screenwriting career. On the web you absolutely have to understand where your bread is buttered because it is highly likely you have had to go and churn the milk yourself. Please let that be what you take away from my blog.

This site represents a departure from the absurd ‘digg-bait/guest blog/lists-of-crap’ received wisdom from all those blogs who blog about blogging to people who only want to talk about blogging. In fact, if you look carefully through the archives you will see that the site started out that way… doing exactly what it was told (shit I even Americanised the spelling!)… and then it started to loosen up… and then it started to swear… and now it’s here! An odd, homely, sack of wisdom and bile. Like the author:

The Author

Small Screens is maintained by me, London-based writer Gordon White. My personal weblog can be found here .

Firstly it’s important that you know I am a surprisingly good cook. I’m not entirely sure why but this seems to be a cornerstone of my self esteem. If you ever need anything from me just compliment my cooking. I’m like a 1950s housewife but without the freaky sex.

My early career was quite ADHD (not literally). After graduating with majors in Interactive Multimedia and Writing I worked for Virgin Entertainment as visual entertainment manager in Sydney, where I helped launch the city’s first Virgin Megastore. Then there was a bit of events/staging. Then some freelance writing.

But for the most part it has been advertising and media. First in magazines, then newspapers and then online (including a number of online TV series). It was in online that I thrived. And it is in online that I will likely stay. I say ‘likely’ because who knows what the landscape will look like in twenty years time? But rest assured… Wherever nerds gather, that’s where you’ll find me -quietly judging them.

Please not I am also for sale when it comes to copy writing, custom publishing, freelance writing, etc.

There are no rate cards or anything for this kind of work because it’s sporadic  (no intention of giving up the day job anytime soon) and the rates are variable. The rate could even be free if you are in some way awesome.

Portfolio, etc available.
